Why Fall Is A Good Time For A/C Installation

Did you put off purchasing and having a new air conditioning system installed all summer? It’s time to bite the bullet and take advantage of what the fall season has to offer. Even though you may think it’s wise to wait until the spring, find out why now is the perfect time:

  1. Thinking you should wait until the spring to have a new air conditioning system installed? Think about how many other homeowners have the same plans. This could mean that air conditioning companies will be extremely busy when warmer temperatures make their way back into town and you may have to wait until they can fit you in.

  1. Now that temperatures are getting a bit cooler, you can probably go a few days without running your system. This will give your A/C company time to remove your old system and install the new one without your home overheating. Take advantage of milder temperatures and crack the windows for some fresh air!

  1. Some dealers and manufacturers offer end-of-season incentives. You may be able to get a great deal on a new system during the cooler months.

Since our beginning in 1983, Aspen Air Conditioning has been focused on the comfort needs of Southeast Florida residents at home and at work. We pride ourselves in achieving the highest customer satisfaction through our TEAM of experts which include our installation, service and inside support. Give us a call at 561-395-1500 when you’re ready to have a new A/C system installed.

Keep Your Family Safe With Nest Protect

Say goodbye to your old smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and say hello to Nest Protect. This new smart home device is taking safety and security to the next level. How? Find out about its Emergency Shutoff feature and how it can keep the people inside your home protected.

Lots of times when there is an emergency inside a home, heating and cooling equipment can actually make the situation worse. Think about it like this, your carbon monoxide detector is going off while your home’s heating system continues to run on fossil fuels (such as oil or gas). Or how about if your home is filling with smoke. If you have any fans running or the air conditioning vents are blowing air throughout your home, guess what? The smoke is going to spread.

Nest Protect's Emergency Shutoff feature actively fights back to keep you and your family safe. It works with your thermostat to turn your heating or cooling systems off when an emergency strikes.

It’s important to keep in mind that this feature is based on the type of system you enter during thermostat setup and it only works with forced air systems. It also won’t with electric systems - it must be gas, oil or other fossil fuels.

Want to learn more about Nest smart home products? Give the experts at Aspen Air Conditioning a call today - we’re waiting to speak with you!

Nest Auto-Away Feature

You’ve had a Nest thermostat installed, but that’s only the first step towards saving on your energy bills. This smart thermostat comes equipped with a variety of features to help keep your wallet full when it comes to heating and cooling your home. Take Auto-Away for example - find out what it is and how it can help you save below:

Auto-Away saves you energy and money by reducing heating and cooling when you leave the house. Homeowners with traditional thermostats have to manually change the temperature when they leave the house and then again when they return home - but Nest takes all of the extra work out of the equation.

How does it work? Once your thermostat is installed, it will take about a week for it to learn your heating and cooling demands. It will also take into account when there are people inside the home and when it is empty, tailoring the temperature to meet these needs. The thermostat will actually power itself down when it detects that nobody is home and will kick back on upon arrival.

Don’t like the Auto-Away temperature settings? You can view and change them any time by clicking on SETTINGS and then clicking on AWAY, either on the thermostat itself or on the app.

Still have questions about your Nest Learning Thermostat? Feel free to contact the cooling experts at Aspen Air Conditioning today. Our technicians are well-versed when it comes to Nest products and will be able to answer any questions you may have! Call us today at 561-395-1500.

How To Keep Cool When The Power Goes Out

We are smack dab in the middle of Atlantic Hurricane Season and South Florida is not exactly a hurricane-free zone. We often experience severe storms and strong winds that have the ability to knock out anything in its path - including the power. So, how can you keep cool in the event of a power outage? Find out below:

  1. Keep Windows Closed - when the sun is out during the day, keep your windows closed. Not only should you keep them closed, you should also close the curtains - the darker the better. If it gets cooler at night, you can open the windows then.
  2. Eat Cool - instead of finding ways to boil water for pasta or preparing hot meals, eat cold foods instead. Ice pops and cold-cut sandwiches are much better options.
  3. Choose Your Clothes Wisely - put down the tight-fitting gym clothes and opt for loose-fitting, light-colored clothing instead. It will help keep air circulating and keep you cooler.
  4. Go For A Swim - you can purchase battery powered fans for when you have to be inside, but going for a swim is a great way to cool off outside. Keep in mind that swimming during a storm is a major health hazard, so be sure to wait until it passes.

Having trouble with your central air conditioning system? Contact the experts at Aspen Air Conditioning today and we’ll get it back up and running for you before you lose your cool.

Can You Run An Air Conditioner During A Thunderstorm?

Late August and September are notorious for being hot and humid in South Florida and that’s also the perfect recipe for severe thunderstorms. But you may want to think twice before turning your cooling system on the next time the weather acts up - it could cause serious damage.

Lightning Strikes
Even though lightning striking a home is rare, if it does happen it can really damage your air conditioning system. When lightning strikes, it can send as much as 5 billion joules of energy through your home’s electrical system. That’s way more than enough to damage your cooling system if it’s turned on.

What Can Happen To It?
For starters, lightning can melt the plug to your unit. In addition, it can damage the control panel and corrupt the entire system. The control panel is filled with sensitive electrical circuitry, so it’s best to turn it off when a storm hits.

Can I Turn On The AC If It’s Raining?
Rain alone will not harm your air conditioner. In fact, turning the system on during warm, rainy days can make your home feel much more comfortable. The only time you would need to be concerned is if the rain was severe enough to leave standing water around the unit. In that case, it would be wise to power it down.

Common Air Conditioning Terms

Condenser coil. MERV. Refrigerant. When it comes to air conditioning jargon, there are dozens of terms tossed around that may seem like another language to most homeowners. We understand that terms that are common to us may not be so common to you so we’ve put together a list to make it crystal clear.

Airflow: the distribution or movement of air

Bioaerosols: living organisms in the air that grow and multiply in warm, humid climates

Condenser Coil: the outdoor part of an air conditioner that releases  or collects heat

Compressor: the part of an air conditioner that compresses and pumps refrigerant to meet household cooling requirements

MERV Rating: minimum efficiency reporting value, rating of a filter that describes the size of the holes in the filter that allows air to pass through. The higher the MERV rating, the higher the efficiency

Refrigerant: chemical that produces a cooling effect while expanding or vaporizing. Most residential units contain Freon.

Still unsure about what certain air conditioning terms mean? Contact the cooling experts at Aspen Air Conditioning today - we’ll be glad to explain them to you. Don’t forget to connect with us on Facebook for all of your South Florida cooling needs!

Removing Mold From Your AC

Is there a mildew smell coming from your air conditioning vents? Are there visible black spots in the air ducts, intake vents or cooling coils? This can mean that you have mold in your home’s cooling system and it should be addressed immediately. After all, South Florida’s warm, moist climate is the perfect breeding ground.

What Causes Mold?
There are two main sources of mold in your air conditioning system: condensation and organic material. Condensation forms when parts of the system get cold while the rest of the room is warm and humid.

Where does the organic material come from? As dust collects both in the unit itself and within the air ducts, it brings pollen and dead skin cells with it. Combine this food for mold with a damp environment and you’ve got the perfect place for mold to grow.

How To Remove Mold
If you have large areas contaminated with mold, it’s best to call in an expert. If you only have a few small areas, you can do it yourself by following the steps below:
  • Mix half a cup of baking soda with 1 cup of water and 1 Tbsp of mild liquid detergent
  • Put on an air mask, gloves and safety goggles for protection from mold spores
  • Apply the cleaning solution and use a damp rag or low-abrasive brush to scrub the mold
  • Once the mold is removed, clean up the area and dispose of anything that had contact with the mold

When you need air conditioning repair, service or installations in Southeast Florida, there’s only one company to call. Aspen Air Conditioning has been providing the highest level of comfort since 1983.

How To Keep Your AC Pumping All Summer Long

Have you ever experienced an air conditioner breakdown during the dog days of summer? The weather in South Florida has been unreasonable hot which makes our cooling systems work harder. Why does that matter? The harder our systems have to work, the more likely they are to quit working when we need them most. Find out how to keep them going all season long below:

Clean The Filter
Did you know that a clogged filter can cause ice to form in the coils? If the indoor coil is iced over, clean or replace the filter and turn the unit off. Let it defrost for a few hours before turning it back on because ice can block airflow considerably.

Check The Breaker
This is a common reason for service calls, but this problem can often be handled by the homeowner. Make sure the breaker is turned on at the electrical panel if you have an electric air handler.

Inspect The Thermostat
Check the temperature setting on the thermostat to make sure your house is in fact calling for cool air. If it’s not blowing cool air when it should be, contact the experts at Aspen Air Conditioning - that’s what we’re here for!

Our mission is to provide our customers with the highest level of comfort through quality maintenance, service and installation practices. Since our beginning in 1983, Aspen Air Conditioning has been focused on the comfort needs of Southeast Florida residents at home and at work. Call us today to make an appointment!
